Ruth Jên Evans Winner of the peoples Choice Award at the National Eisteddfod 2023.

Awarded by the Josef Herman Art Institute, Ystradgynlais, to the most popular piece or collection of work, from among the material selected for the Open Exhibition at Y Lle Celf.

The award was be presented by BBC’s Garry Owen at Y Lle Celf at 3.00pm, Saturday afternoon, 12 August.

This year’s winner was Ruth Jên Evans, big congratulations to her.

Ruth said:

“I am very happy to have won the People’s Choice award especially as the award is in Josef Herman’s name. This is especially important as the title of the piece in Lle Celf is Migration and Herman himself migrated from his home and became a refugee in Britain.

“I hope I can bring the piece to Ystradgynlais. It is also very exciting that the Josef Herman Art Foundation has bought Capel Sardis – this is a great opportunity to develop Herman’s presence in Ystradgynlais.”

There are over 600 clay creatures created by hand in this installation which deals with the theme of migration. It raises questions about our response to the age-old problem of migration. The creatures create families or tribes. The artist is also influenced by folklore and the world of nature.
